When I first purchased the TomTom XXL 540TM; I got a bit skeptical because the activation code and map updates weren’t operating well. So I started to do a complete backup of the explorer at the Windows level. This took 46 minutes after which I took a backup again with the Home software which again took the same time.
After this, I deleted the voices which weren’t required on the TomTom XXL 540TM for freeing up some disc space. I got 30-40 MB for more extra space. The total free space now was about 400 MB so I didn’t delete any thing else. I then punched the activation code which was supposed to give me lifetime free of charge updates for map with my house software.
TomTom XXL 540TM automatically detected if there any new versions of maps for downloading. Getting the new maps takes about 20 minutes and after that, you need to spare another half hour for updating the device. The maps which were downloaded were sized at 1.7 GB and earlier versions were just 1.43 GB big. Right now, my device has 60 MB free space with of its 1.9GB capacity. If I hadn’t deleted the unwanted voices, this space too would have been filled up.
The performance of the TomTom XXL 540TM is really good. It picked up the signal very fast and it is nowhere close to my four year old HP-IPaq GPS device running TomTom application. Before this, I also got Garmin 755T for use. I didn’t really like it because it did not have date maps of locations. It didn’t show my house at all on the map. I tried searching for updates but saw that the device was fully updated and still didn’t show my street name.
I then tried to contact the customer service but they made me wait too long so I got frustrated and hung up. TomTom support is much better and the reps are very friendly on the phone. I got to them in no time and it just took a couple of minutes for my problem to get solved. TomTom XXL 540TM is one of the better devices that I have had to date.
